All Wired Up

"So, how are things going at your dance studio?" asked Baby Girl. (We had traveled to her house for Little Baby Girl's 4th birthday.)

"Pretty good," I told her. "With the economy like it is, we don't have as many students as usual, but we are clearing a profit. All in all, we're satisfied."

Now, if you know The Guy and me, you know we are some of the least likely people on the planet to own a dance studio. If you don't know us, trust me on this issue.  But this has been a running joke between our goddaughter and us lately, ever since she discovered that someone with our names owns a dance studio in North Versailles Pennsylvania.

"Do you know how I found that dance studio?" she asked.

Come to think of it, that was a good question. Between her job and keeping Little Baby Girl, Baby Boy, and Mr. Baby Girl happy, I couldn't see her idly sitting around googling us.

"I have to google you every time I mail you something. I can never remember if your house number is 312 or 315."

Which brought up a whole different point.

"Do you not have an address book?" I asked her.

"No." She looked a little chagrined. "I had every address I needed on my wedding website. They kept it up for four years and then one day, all of a sudden, it disappeared."

I wouldn't really call that all of a sudden but I didn't take that up with her. I made the mental note to solve the address book problem for her.

Now, before you think I am feeling all superior about this, I will point out that, while I do have an address book that is in pretty good shape, I am entirely too dependent on electronics—my cell and my programmable home phone—for phone numbers. I discovered this last year in the aftermath of the tornadoes. While I had a working house phone, it was not one with speed dial and my cell phone died.  And I have done nothing to rectify this situation except hope the power doesn’t go off. Which it will. Eventually.

So while I am getting together an address book for Baby Girl, maybe I will do something about my phone numbers.

Are you too dependent on electronics for basic information?

  1. I have all my phone numbers programmed in the cell/home phone/computer. I have hard copy info of the addresses in my House Binder (yes I am that anal), but no phone numbers. I definitely need to change that!!

I am very attached to my electronics.

Oh, I must confess I stopped and reread the dance studio line three times before reading forward and discovering the reality.

    Too funny!

  2. I have house binders too! But no phone numbers. It's warranties, receipts and such.

Perhaps The Guy and I should have a tv show. Dancing with the Klutzes.

  3. I have a binder at home for warranties and receipts and such too, but I have no idea where it is. One of the resident Flynns is a bit protective of that manual and I just can't be bothered. But I keep a 3x5 card file full of contact info...a homemade Rolodex kinda thing. Everyone laughs at me for keeping it. But it's reliable and if somebody moves I just make them a new card to refresh and Voila! I'm done. Plus anything that's on my phone is in a cloud or two, and my computer has more backups than you can shake a stick at! lol

    1. What is this cloud you speak of? Is this some kind of charming whimsical Lesia speak or is it a computer thing?

Either way, I need a cloud.

    2. Ha! It DOES sound like a Lesia-speak!!! But alas, I cannot take credit. There are several "clouds". If you use an iPhone, you get the iCloud that goes with the phone to backup your information. Then there's Evernote online which is more of a notebook in the cloud that writers love. If you don't know about this, I can show you when we have lunch (hint, hint). Then of course you can use your email as a cloud by emailing or storing info there so that if you equipment breaks you can still access the information that google or yahoo has saved for you in their cloud. Really, the point of a cloud is to protect your info should you loose the device you're working from...phones, computers and such. But if the power fails, you're up a creek and it's back to the manual, file box or whatever handwritten storage system you use. If you want more info, just google "cloud storage". Oh! And it's not really for sensitive information, but then, how sensitive could my mother-in-law's birth date really be?

  4. I have numbers and e-mail addresses in my phone, but I also have a Rolodex, an address book, and I always carry a small two-year calendar that not only is for my appointments, but has important phone numbers and addresses written down, as well as important anniversaries, birthdays, etc. My phone has died on me before. I can't carry a Rolodex around with me. But that little two-year calendar book has never crashed, never lost its data, and still works even if the electricity is off. I keep them, too, even when time has moved on and left them behind. Someday, when I die, someone will be going through my personal effects and find all these little calendars and wonder, "Why in heck did she keep all this crap????"

Just for that moment, of course :-).

    2. Oh, my. For years I ran my life out of a DayRunner. I have every one I ever owned. If anyone wants to see what I needed from the grocery store on Feb. 3, 1991, they can. Or when I went to the dentist in 1995. I liked the DayRunner system but it was heavy to carry, though worth it in the years when I was working a day job and doing volunteer work for about five organizations. In fact, I still use it at home for my address book, Christmas lists, and such. (I also have a s**t list written under S, though I haven't added to in a while due to a certain amount of mellowing out.) I also carry a small two year calendar, but I don't use it for anything except to write what is going to happen to me. I should transfer phone numbers. And maybe my s list.

    1. I highly recommend it. It takes a lot to get on my s** list, but it feels really good to just write that name down. And you can't go to jail for it.

  6. I've got calendars everywhere. (Gotta remember to look at them. Heehee!) But I do have a 2 yr small calendar in my purse. I carry another one to chapter meetings. I glance at the one on my iphone periodically. LTC used to print off one with birthdays/anniversaries/events for us when the kids were growing up, so we'd know where we needed to be when.

I have a hard copy address book, but I also have all the addresses adjusted to labels so I can print them out for christmas cards and such during the year. Best thing I ever did.

Black Books anyone? Mine is mental. Whenever LTC does something that loses points, his name goes into the black book. LOL! It's a BIG inside joke for us.
