What Challenges You?

We just finished the final touches on HOD's Annual Romance Readers' Luncheon. A lot of planning goes into this event every year and there are so many people involved. As luncheon coordinator, I'm always thrilled when another successful luncheon has seen its day. To pull this off, after such horrific weather and the loss of one of our dearest authors, took lots of determination this year. But we did it! HOD presented the best luncheon yet.

After such a whirlwind, what does one do with their time? Aha! The fact that there is time to spare is absolutely unheard of around here. ;)

I've actually been working on entering the Maggie's this year, a contest given by the Georgia Romance Writers. But instead of just entering one, I decided to enter four manuscripts. Ack! What grandiose goals took over my mind? I've been knee deep in luncheon business, the deadline is Friday and I've still got two entries to submit.

So, even though the luncheon is over, my life is still just as hectic these days. Apparently, I'm a glutton for punishment. I've entered contests before. Some brought me enlightenment, others disappointment and criticism. But who are we if we cannot learn and grow along the way to meeting our goals?

I've given a short craft corner on contests. Contests are tricky monsters. But when you final, as I finaled in the Romance Through the Ages contest in the Legend Award category this year, the rewards are bountiful.

So it is, with hope swelling my breast, that I submit these books to the Maggie's this week. Maybe my entries will cancel each other out. Maybe none of them will final. But if I don't try, I will never know.

Is there something you're willing to go out on a limb for these days? If so, let us know. We'd love to hear what challenges you!

  1. I honestly don't know how you do all you do! You are an amazement to me! I hope every one of those entries finals and I am sure they will! Thank you for all the hard work you put in preparing the luncheon. Without you, it would not have been so wonderful!

Lately, I have been challenged just to sit still. I cannot seem to focus or make myself even think. Perhaps it is a slump. I envy you your drive! Good luck in the Maggies!

  2. Hi Kathy! First of all I want to thank you for coordinating another fabulous luncheon. As always you were grace under pressure. And I know you'll get the Maggies out the door, too!! Wonderful effort. I got my MAGGIE out this week. Whew. I also finaled in a contest and got a request so that made my day.

I'm trying hard to push through the new WIP despite having a lot of distractions like college tours, cleaning house, shopping for Nationals, and a crazy little cat who loves to cuddle.

    :-)

  3. I've been living on a limb so long I don't know where else to be. Oddly, I do not have a problem showing my work. I do not fear rejection because it's not personal and I believe, in the big picture, I will succeed.

What challenges me is walking into a room full of people I don't know. I can't explain it because I am not shy. Once I am comfortable, I'm fine. And, as long as I have time to prepare, I do not mind speaking to large groups. I did that frequenely in my former day job and it was never a problem for me. Sitting on panels was a little stressful because I had to think on my feet (well, bottom--sitting, you see) but I never had a true problem.

But I'd rather eat glass than go to a big party where I don't know a lot of people.

Kathy, for a second I thought you really had a swollen breast. Then I got it.

  4. Cheryl, the success of the luncheon stems from first contact with you, my registration guru! Thank you for all the time you put into making the luncheon accessible to all of our attendees. ;)

Sometimes you need to sit back and digest what's going on around you. You're characters will start talking again soon and you'll feel the need to pick at the keyboard, Cheryl. I just know it!

  5. Congratulations on the contest final and request, Christine! You're on a roll!

Thanks for your help with the luncheon too. You have been there for me and I really appreciate you more than you know!

As for timing everything on your plate, enjoy each task and move on to the next. Cuddly cats are ever so wonderful, except when they walk across the keyboard when you're in the zone. LOL!

  6. Aha! Perhaps my breasts are swollen! ;)

Jean, you are a hoot! You are so socialable that I doubt you would have any problems fitting into a crowd. You've never met a stranger and your personality shines when you meet people for the first time. I've witnessed your southern charm at work. I really do look up to you in that regard.

By the way, did you know glass spelled backwards is 'ssalg'? That doesn't sound appetizing, Jean. :(

  7. Kathy,
I am so proud of you!!

Right now my biggest challenge seems to be finding a good candidate to run for RWA Board of Directors for Region 4.

  8. Thanks, Stephanie! ;)

As for the RWA Board of Directors, Region 4, I'm sure you'll find the right person for the job. Good luck with your search!
